Vetting chaos probe suspended indefinitely

The special committee investigating the chaos that erupted during the vetting of ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30, 2025, has suspended sitting indefinitely following a directive by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

The suspension of the sitting was announced by the chairman of the seven-member committee, Emmanuel Bedzrah, on the first day of the hearing.

Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, a clerk of parliament for the Appointments Committee, who was verbally attacked by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, was providing her statement when the chairman announced the suspension.

“The clerk of parliament has instructed that we should suspend the sitting until further notice, and therefore, I want everybody to be aware that it is not the committee that has decided to stop, but the Clerk to Parliament of Ghana has requested that until he gets further instruction from the speaker, the committee should suspend the sitting. On that note, we want to discharge you,” Mr. Bedzrah explained.

Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor; Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga; Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza; Tourism Minister Dzifa Gomashie; Pru West MP Emmanuel Kofi Ntekuni; and Keta MP Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey testified on the accounts of what transpired during the vetting sessions before the abrupt end of the probe.
