Unpaid teachers threaten legal action over arrears

The Coalition of Unpaid Teachers has issued a warning that it will initiate legal proceedings if the government does not meet its outstanding demands by the conclusion of January.

The organisation stressed that it does not interpret the government’s inaction as neglect, but rather as a failure to prioritise its issues.

Their requests encompass the payment of arrears, the issuance of remaining staff IDs, and the addition of missing names to both the master list and the revalidation list.

During a media briefing on Monday, January 5, 2025, Convener Enoch Kofi Nartey recognised the difficulties confronting the education sector but pointed out that these competing challenges have led to the concerns of unpaid teachers not being prioritized or sufficiently addressed.

“When you employ someone, it is a contract and an agreement, and if you do not pay the person for some months, the person has the right to go through the legal procedures for his or her issues to be addressed.

“We will seek legal consultation and take it from there, if the government does not address our concern this January,” Nartey stated.
