Unknown assailants have lynched a suspected thief identified as Yaw Gyamfi at Bokankye in the Atwiman Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.
The deceased is believed to be in his late 30s and a mason by profession.
In the early hours of Thursday, June 1, 2023, the lifeless body was found lying by some iron rods he allegedly stole in the area.
Some of the residents who rushed to the scene claimed they awoke to discover the deceased’s motionless body, adding that they have no idea who may have killed him.
A Unit Committee member of the Bokankye Electoral Area, Madam Jemima Pokua said they are not surprised by the incident as they have been experiencing a series of robbery cases in recent times.
However, she claimed that she smells foul play in this particular situation because there were no indications that someone was struggling at the scene.
She urged the Ghana Police to look into the case immediately and track out the victim’s killers.
The police have since conveyed the mortal remains of the victim to the hospital for further investigation.
Meanwhile, the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, has condemned the recent lynching of two persons over an accusation of witchcraft, at Zakpalsi, in the Mion District of the Northern Region.
Ya Na Abukari II said lynching people over witchcraft accusations was not right and had no justification in the Dagbon traditional area.
He said. “No one has the right to take the life of another man,” adding that, “all the factions involved in the lynching incident at Zakpalsi are my children.
“If they had informed me earlier, we could have addressed these issues amicably without anyone losing his or her life,” Ya Na Abukari II said, when a delegation from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), led by the Sector Minister Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu, paid a courtesy call on him at the Gbewaa Palace at Yendi to seek his support to stop the lynching of people accused of witchcraft in the Northern Region.
Ya Na Abukari Il commended the MoGCSP for the visit and pledged to institute measures to intensify sensitization and advocacy to help safeguard the rights of persons accused of witchcraft in the traditional area.
