Suspected black flies invade Dawhenya

Insects suspected to be black flies have infested some communities in Dawhenya in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region.

The areas affected are Abbeykope, Miotso, Eagle Nest Estates, and Mackweon Estates.

According to the Assembly member for the area, Moses Nii-P Kutor, the flies have been leaving blood stains at the bite sites on the bodies of the residents.

Some of the affected residents have been continuously scratching their skins resulting in swells on their bodies.

“The stings of the flies we are told are poisonous and leave sores and other skin diseases on their victims.

“The situation is getting worse by the day and my worry is about the children, especially those in school who keep complaining about the invasion and the painful bites,” Mr Kutor said.

He went on to say that he had reported the incident to the District Health Directorate and the Environmental Health Office, pleading for immediate attention to the situation so that residents could resume their normal lives.

The District Health Directorate has also confirmed the presence of flies in the area and indicated that efforts were underway to tackle the situation.

According to sources at the directorate, they are collaborating with the environmental health office to develop strategies, including fumigation of affected communities.
