The Sunyani Traditional Council has suspended the Queen Mother of Sunyani, Nana Akosua Asor Sika Dua Brayie, with immediate effect, barring her from carrying out any traditional functions or receiving courtesies associated with her title.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Old Sunyani Palace in Area One, Sunyani, following violent disturbances linked to a disputed chieftaincy installation.
Addressing the media, the Acting President of the Council, Nana Kwaku Sabin, stated that Nana Akosua Asor Sika Brayie should no longer be recognised in any official capacity.
“Any group or individual who invites or refers to Nana Akosua Asor Sika Brayie as the Queen Mother of Sunyani will face sanctions from the Traditional Council,” Nana Sabin warned.
The Council’s decision follows a controversial move by the Queen Mother on Monday, 16 June 2025, when she unilaterally enstooled a 63-year-old US-based Doctor of Physical Therapy, Dr. Osei Tutu, under the stool name Ofentemfrem Omenasono Dr. Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri III.
The early-morning enstoolment triggered a violent confrontation between private security personnel loyal to Nana Brayie and supporters of the incumbent Sunyanimanhene, Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor III. A gun battle reportedly broke out at the Old Sunyanimanhene Palace, underscoring the growing tension surrounding the succession of the late Paramount Chief, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri.
Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor, addressing the press after the clashes, called for calm and reiterated his commitment to peace and development in the area.
“All I seek for Sunyani is development. I will not allow anyone to disturb the peace we have worked hard to maintain,” he stated.
Nana Kwaku Sabin described the Queen Mother’s actions as unconstitutional and in direct violation of customary protocols. He said her unilateral enstoolment was illegitimate, particularly because the Sunyani Traditional Council already recognises Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor III as the rightful Paramount Chief.
“Nana Akosua Asor Sika Brayie has no legal or customary locus to enstool a chief on behalf of the Sunyani Traditional Area,” Nana Sabin stressed.
The Traditional Council concluded by condemning the Queen Mother’s conduct, calling it a threat to the peace, unity, and heritage of the Sunyani chieftaincy.
