A joint effort between the Ghana Police Service and the Military Police has led to the arrest and detention of a soldier who fired an AK47 rifle to welcome the new year.
The suspect has been identified as Flt. Sergeant Nicholas Owusu, a military man.
A statement on Monday, 3 January 2022, signed by the Director of Public Affairs Supt. Alexander Kwaku Obeng said investigations were ongoing.
The police further advised the public to refrain from acts that compromise public safety and order as they celebrate a crossover into the new year.
Flt. Sergeant Owusu was captured on video, firing several rounds into the air at the ANC Mall, East Legon, on Friday, 31 December 2021.
In a statement, the police said it was “a crime to discharge a firearm in public without lawful and necessary occasion under Section 209 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29)”.
Several individuals, including musician Shatta Wale and comedian Funny Face, have found themselves on the wrong side of the law for brandishing weapons.
The latest is rapper Medikal, who is standing trial for brandishing a Ruger 9mm pistol in a video found on social media and has been charged with displaying arms and ammunition.
Medikal, known in real life as Samuel Adu Frimpong, has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The 28-year-old rapper was remanded by a Circuit Court judge in Accra on Friday, 22 October 2021, when he first appeared before the court.
He has been granted bail in the sum of GHC100, 000.
