Sofoline underpass turns dangerous after dark

A pedestrian underpass meant to protect lives at the Sofoline interchange in Kumasi is now a source of fear.

With no working lights, the tunnel has become a hotspot for crime, pushing many commuters to risk crossing the busy road above instead.

Locals say the once-safe passage has turned into a trap. Muggings, harassment and attacks have become disturbingly frequent. The darkness inside the tunnel makes it easy for criminals to hide and strike.

“The underpass is a no-go area after dusk. It’s completely dark, and you can feel the danger. We have heard too many stories of people being robbed at knifepoint. It’s safer to dodge traffic upstairs than to walk through that tunnel,” said one commuter who preferred to stay anonymous.

The issue came into the spotlight after a media report showed the extent of the problem.

That coverage prompted the Urban Roads Department and the Sofoline project consultant to visit the site for an urgent assessment.

Ashanti Regional Director of Urban Roads, Ing. Naeem Iddrisu, confirmed that the lighting system had failed due to stolen cables.

He revealed plans to install solar-powered lights and work with the Assembly to provide permanent security personnel.

Although no timeline has been announced, the presence of engineers and officials has given residents hope.

Many are now waiting for swift action to restore the underpass to its original purpose, a safe and convenient route for pedestrians.
