Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova says negotiations between Moscow and Washington on exchanging prisoners are ongoing, but have not yielded results yet.
Reports suggest Moscow is interested in exchanging US basketball star Brittney Griner for convicted Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist has been in custody since February after Moscow airport officials found cannabis oil in her luggage.
Griner, 31, pleaded guilty to the drug charges against her but denied deliberately breaking the law.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he would raise the matter in a call next week with Russia’s foreign minister.
Blinken and Sergei Lavrov have not spoken since the war in Ukraine began.
