The Tema Regional Police Command has foiled an attempted armed robbery at Afienya Mataheko, an operation that ended with the death of four suspected robbers in the early hours of Monday, December 29, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service, the operation followed days of intelligence gathering after police received information about a group planning robberies within the Tema Metropolis and surrounding areas.
Acting on the tip-off, officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate were deployed and placed the suspects under surveillance.
In the early hours of Monday, at about 1:00 am, police officers spotted four men attempting to break into a residential property at Afienya Mataheko.
When officers moved in to stop the break-in, they reportedly came under gunfire, leading to a shootout.
During the exchange, all four suspects sustained gunshot wounds. Three of them, identified as Kwabena Azuwebi, also known as Lastman, Yaro Bawku, and Faisal, were rushed to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
The fourth suspect, Kassim Hussein, was later recaptured after initially escaping the scene. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, but died while receiving medical care.
Police retrieved several items believed to have been intended for the robbery.
These included an AK-47 rifle, a Taurus pistol loaded with ammunition, two cutlasses, and two motorbikes, one of which was unregistered.
All items have been kept as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.
The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary, where autopsies are expected to be conducted.
Police say investigations are continuing to trace and arrest any accomplices connected to the planned attacks.
A police statement said the command remains committed to protecting lives and property and urged the public to continue supporting security efforts with timely information.
