The perjury and forgery trial of the deposed MP for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, is set to proceed daily starting from Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
The decision comes after the Accra High Court rejected a request made by Quayson’s lawyer, Justin Terriwajjah, to postpone the trial until after the Assin North by-election scheduled for June 27.
The trial judge, Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, said the trial would proceed without delay.
Mr Quayson’s counsel argued that his client’s participation in the by-election was a national duty as he sought to represent the people in parliament.
They requested the trial to be postponed to ensure a fair campaign for Quayson.
However, the Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, opposed the request, stating that Quayson had not been assigned any national duty.
The Attorney-General emphasized the seriousness of the charges against Quayson, highlighting that a conviction could lead to imprisonment.
The Attorney-General urged the court to conduct the trial daily, starting the following week.
Quayson’s lawyer agreed with the proposal but requested that the trial be initiated only after the by-election.
The court dismissed the request and scheduled June 20, 21, and 23 to continue the trial.
