Domestic airline PassionAir has confirmed that Flight OP122, en route from Accra to Takoradi on Saturday, May 31, 2025, made a precautionary return to Kotoka International Airport shortly after takeoff due to a technical issue, not a fuel shortage as speculated online.
The flight, which was scheduled to depart at 6:20 AM, ultimately arrived safely in Takoradi at 7:15 AM, after the crew addressed the issue.
An official from the airline explained that shortly after takeoff, the flight crew detected a technical anomaly and chose to return to base in line with standard safety protocols.
“The aircraft returned to Accra as a safety precaution after a technical issue was detected shortly after departure. The situation had nothing to do with fuel,” the official said.
This clarification follows widespread speculation on social media, sparked by a post from a passenger who claimed the plane turned back due to insufficient fuel.
PassionAir has firmly denied this, reiterating that the safety and wellbeing of its passengers remain its top priority.
While the airline declined to provide specific details about the technical fault, it assured the public that the issue was resolved and the aircraft was cleared for safe operation.
“We take such matters seriously and will continue to uphold the highest safety standards in our operations,” the spokesperson added.
