Open letter to Speaker – Interior number plates in all commercial motor vehicles

Story By: Jacob Antwi-Osei

I write about the visibility of number plates in commercial motor vehicles within the country.

As a concerned citizen, I believe that it is crucial to ensure the safety and accountability of our roadways by introducing legislation that mandates the placement of number plates (in a sticker form) inside all commercial vehicles, visible to passengers.

The reasons for this are: To ensure enhanced passenger awareness: Interior number plates (in a sticker form) would enable passengers to readily identify the vehicle they are traveling in.

This can be particularly useful in situations where a passenger might need to report an incident or recall vehicle information accurately.

As crime deterrence and reporting: In cases of criminal activities, such as, theft or someone leaving his or her items in a vehicle or assault, passengers can discreetly note down the interior number plate and provide it to law enforcement agencies.

This could lead to quicker identification and apprehension of suspects.

As an accurate identification for emergency services: During accidents or emergencies, passengers can quickly relay the interior number plate to emergency services, aiding in faster response and providing necessary information for appropriate action.

As a protection against impersonation: Interior number plates can serve as an additional layer of protection against vehicle impersonation or identity theft.

Passengers can cross-reference the interior number with the external ones to verify the authenticity of the vehicle.

For transparent rideshare services: For passengers utilising rideshare services, interior number plates would offer an added sense of security by allowing them to confirm the vehicle’s identity before getting in.

To facilitating dispute resolution: In the event of disagreements between passengers and drivers over details of the trip, having the interior number plate can help resolve disputes more effectively.

And for educational and awareness benefits: Promoting the practice of checking both exterior and interior number plates could raise awareness among passengers about road safety and security measures.

Considering these reasons, I urge you to consider this initiative, which aligns with the broader efforts to enhance road safety, security and accountability in our country.

I eagerly anticipate positive action towards making our roads safer and more secure for all passengers.
