The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a public advisory regarding the utilisation of Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial passenger transport in Ghana, especially on long-distance routes, due to safety and roadworthiness concerns.
The Authority indicated that a considerable number of these vehicles were initially produced as right-hand drive (RHD) models and later converted to left-hand drive (LHD) after being imported.
Reports indicate that some of the converted vehicles might encounter handling and stability issues, particularly at higher speeds or while navigating curves, raising doubts about their appropriateness for passenger transport.
In light of these concerns, the NRSA has announced the establishment of a Technical Working Group (TWG) to carry out a comprehensive investigation and suggest regulatory measures as needed.
The Authority warned the public in an interim advisory, stating that:
“Pending the conclusion of the work of the Technical Working Group, the NRSA cautions motorists and the general travelling public to exercise heightened vigilance in the patronage and operation of Toyota Voxy vehicles used for commercial transport, particularly those that have undergone RHD-to-LHD conversion.”
The NRSA emphasised that the advisory is “purely a precautionary public safety measure and does not constitute a final determination on the safety or roadworthiness of any vehicle category.”
Road users are encouraged to make informed choices to ensure their safety while investigations are in progress.
