Police in Chiana, Upper East Region, have arrested a man for illegal possession of firearms and attempting to bribe officers with GH¢800.
The operation was part of an ongoing crackdown by the Navrongo Divisional Police Command to address rising violent crimes in the area.
The suspect, whose name is being withheld for investigative reasons, was picked up during an intelligence-led patrol by the division’s motorbike team.
Officers conducted a routine search at his residence and uncovered two locally made pistols and two live cartridges.
The officers, four in number, also reported that the suspect tried to offer them GH¢800 in cash to avoid arrest. The money was documented as evidence and declined without hesitation.
This development follows a disturbing trend of robberies in Chiana, particularly on market days. One of the most alarming incidents occurred on May 22, 2025, when four men on motorbikes stormed the local market.
They attacked traders and escaped with large sums of money, leaving many residents traumatized.
Efforts to restore calm have since intensified, with police increasing patrols and gathering intelligence to prevent further attacks.
The suspect has been moved to Navrongo to assist with further investigations and is expected to face charges soon.
