The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) instituted the global celebration of World Poetry Day in 1999.

Another objective for celebrating the WPD is to persuade governments worldwide to provide a proper place for poetry in all systems of education, from primary to higher levels of education.

Consequently, the National Theatre of Ghana collaborates with Ehalakasa to celebrate this day yearly with a series of activities.

They will hold poetry workshops in five Senior High schools in the Eastern Region, namely; Ofori Panin SHS, Pope John SHS, Oti Boateng SHS, Oyoko Methodist SHS and Ghana Senior High School.

The programme is geared towards offering students in other regions the opportunity to learn poetry writing, performance skills and appreciation of poetry.

The initiative aligns with one of the goals of the National Theatr,e “to engage and enrich our communities”.

This engagement is believed to go a long way to impact the students in sharpening their public speaking and writing skills.

According to the organisers, “poets from Ehalakasa have partnered with the National Theatre of Ghana for poetry activities over the past five years and are known for their creativity. During the workshops, they will share their writing experience with students, teach them some techniques in writing, and how to ‘weave’ words beautifully as a weaver would weave the traditional Ghanaian Kente cloth”.

The main sponsor for this year’s World Poetry Day celebration is the KGL Foundation which is a corporate social responsibility organisation that impacts societies positively.
