NAIMOS dismantles illegal mining sites in Obuasi

The National Anti-illegal Mining Operations Secretariat has carried out a major sweep to disrupt illegal mining activities in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

November 17, 202,5, after intelligence pointed to active galamsey sites endangering both the environment and the safety of nearby communities.

The task force stormed the mining areas at Anyankyirem, a concession legally owned by Ashanti Gold Corporation.

According to officials, the site had been overrun by illegal miners who were working without regard for safety or environmental protection.

The team also moved to secure areas around the Obuasi Airport where similar unlawful mining activities had been reported.

Several items believed to have supported the operations were seized during the raid. These included motorbikes, vehicles and water pumps.

Makeshift shelters and tools used for the mining work were also destroyed to prevent a quick return to the area.

Many of the miners fled when they noticed the approach of the security team, leaving behind the equipment that powered their operations.

One man suspected to be a key organiser of the illegal activities was arrested. Authorities say he is currently assisting police with investigations that may lead to prosecution.

A member of the task force described the mission as an important step toward restoring lawful and responsible mining practices in the region.

The operation has brought renewed attention to the ongoing struggle against galamsey and the need for strong collaboration between communities and law enforcement to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
