MoFFA issues one-week ultimatum to unlicensed mortuaries

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has given all unlicensed mortuaries and funeral homes across Ghana one week to regularise their operations or risk being shut down.

In a statement, the Agency raised alarm over the continued operation of both public and private facilities without proper licences.

MoFFA warned that this violates Section 55 of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), which mandates that all such establishments be licensed before offering any services.

The law clearly states that anyone who operates a mortuary or funeral facility without the required licence commits an offence. Such operators could face hefty fines or even have their facilities temporarily or permanently shut down.

The Agency noted that it has observed a worrying trend of non-compliance, which poses significant health and legal risks to the public.

“Our core mandate is to license, control, and regulate all establishments involved in the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains,” the statement said. “We are urging all operators who have not yet complied to do so immediately.”

MoFFA said it would begin strict enforcement of the directive once the one-week grace period elapses. Any facility found to be operating without the necessary approvals after the deadline will face appropriate sanctions, including closure.

The Agency encouraged facility owners to engage with them directly to complete the licensing process and avoid disruption of their services.
