Malian Football Federation terminates contract of Eric Sékou Chelle

The Malian Football Federation (FEMAFOOT) has officially terminated the contract of national team coach Eric Sékou Chelle, effective immediately.

The decision was made by mutual consent, according to a statement released by the FEMAFOOT vice-president on Thursday.

Chelle’s departure comes on the heels of a string of disappointing results, including a quarterfinal exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and a recent draw against Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The final straw was a 1-2 loss to Ghana at home, leading to widespread calls for his resignation.

With only five points from four matches, Mali’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup are now precarious.

Despite Chelle’s desire to continue, the Federation decided to end his tenure.
