A Ghanaian lawyer, Bobby Banson, has warned the lookalikes of Medikal, Black Sherif, King Promise, Mr Drew, Kuami Eugene, Fameye and others for mimicking their profession for personal interest.
A video showing some Ghanaians who resemble famous artistes like Medikal, Black Sherif, King Promise, Mr Drew, Kuami Eugene and Fameye have taken over the internet.
Mr Banson described the action by the lookalikes as unlawful since they perform at events to make money at the expense of the people they are copying.
According to him, impersonation is punishable by law, and the perpetrators who continue with the unlawful behaviour will face the law.
“I think you can look at the unfair competition act that allows somebody to sue another person when the other is taking advantage of his reputation to make undue economic gains.”
“An artiste can use the common law of passing off to make the argument that these so-called lookalikes are taking advantage of his reputation and intellectual property to deceive his followers, and because of that, he has lost X or Y amount of money,” Mr Banson said in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Joy.
While some social media users have commended the lookalikes for their talent in mimicking the artistes to perfection, others have condemned their actions in trying to make monetary gains from the entertainment personalities they are copying.
