KATH Labour Unions fight petition to remove CEO

Story By: Philipina Badu

Labour Unions at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have resisted a petition to oust their Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

This comes after a private legal practitioner, Kwame Adofo submitted a petition to President Akufo-Addo, seeking the removal of Prof. Otchere Addai Mensah.

Mr Adofo, who served as KATH’s legal counsel until December 31, 2023, said he has substantial evidence indicating financial mismanagement and incompetence by Prof. Addai Mensah.

He also alleged that Prof Addai Mensah had misappropriated GHC300,000 without proper accountability and breached procurement processes.

However, the labour unions have defended the CEO, highlighting his dedication to the development of the hospital.

They added that his appointment as the CEO has “positively impacted the hospital”.

“We recognize that the allegation against the CEO does not define his character and dedication to the well-being and development of the hospital. We witness what Professor Addai Mensah has achieved since he was appointed as CEO of KATH,” a statement by the group said.

The group further threatened to vehemently resist any attempt by individuals who sought to mar Prof. Addai Mensah’s legacy.

“We, the Labour Unions in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital stand in solidarity with the CEO and management of the hospital to continue their good works at KATH.”

The President, through the Ministry of Health (MoH), appointed Prof. Addai Mensah in November 2022.

This followed the retirement of Dr Oheneba Owusu Danso who served at the hospital for over three decades.
