I was never attacked in Tamale – Asiedu Nketia

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has denied any attempted attack on him at Tamale in the Northern Region.

There have been media reports of the NDC Chairman narrowly escaping assault at a party meeting in Tamale at the Golden Dream Hotel on January 6, 2024, where the Northern regional treasurer of the party, Hajia Shamima Yakubu, was allegedly subjected to severe beatings.

Reports say Asiedu Nketia was swiftly evacuated to safety during the chaotic incident.

The gathering, intended to foster peace and unity ahead of the 2024 general elections, took an unexpected turn with dramatic twists, including a chaotic chase, jabs at key figures, and a physical altercation resulting in the severe beating of the regional treasurer.

But reacting to media reports in an interview Chairman Asiedu Nketia described the reports in the media as complete fabrications and urged the public to treat them with the contempt they deserve.

”This is an outright concocted story intended to generate unnecessary public discussion to take the minds of the people off the abysmal performance of this government. I have been in the upper regions of the country for the past two weeks working on resolving party matters after our primaries. But on the date the media reports are claiming the incident occurred, I was not in Tamale. I was in Nsawkaw, in the Bono Region, attending the funeral of our MP’s mother. So I don’t know why they are making those claims. We did some work in Tamale earlier. The date the media reports claim the incident happened, there was no meeting at Tamale involving national executives at the party office, as is being alleged.”

“We, the National Executives, are learning of the assault on our regional treasurer on social media and have called the party executives in Tamale to receive a briefing on the incident and the actions we have to take. We’ve heard that the incident has been reported to the police, but we will also look at how we’ll deal with anyone who has flouted party laws,” he said.
