How to create a productive morning routine

Story By: Unwritten

Over the years, I’ve hit snooze on my morning alarm more times than I’d like to admit. Ironically, that extra hour of sleep doesn’t leave me refreshed. Instead, I’m always rushing out the door feeling like the day has already slipped out of my hands before it even starts.

Over time, I realized that the way I spend my mornings sets the tone for the entire day. A perfect morning routine is the difference between a calm and intentional day and a rushed and fatigued one.

This is what my productive morning routine looks like.

1. Wake Up at a Consistent Time

Our bodies run on an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm, which regulates our energy levels and sleep hormones. Waking up at unpredictable times confuses this clock and leads to grogginess and low energy.

Because of this, I try to wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.

My mornings actually start the night before. I discovered that if I wanted to wake up at a consistent time, I needed to respect my bedtime routine, too. Going to bed at random times will sabotage my morning.

If you need more rest, focus on getting to bed earlier.

2. Move Your Body

By moving your body, I don’t necessarily mean a full body workout, unless, of course, that’s something you’re into.

Some days it can be a quick stretch while the coffee brews, and other times, I’ll take a stroll outside if the weather is good. Even a few push-ups and jumping jacks are enough to ‘shake up’ your body and get your energy flowing.

3. Healthy Breakfast

It’s easy to skip breakfast and instead grab something on your way to work. By mid-morning, you’re struggling to focus and reaching for more coffee than you probably should.

Part of my morning routine involves making time for a balanced breakfast. I prefer something that’s quick and easy to prepare, like eggs, avocado, and a smoothie.

Eat a proper breakfast and you’ll be less likely to need a snack before lunch, and at times, even till evening.

4. Plan Your Day

Just because I work from home doesn’t mean I can do whatever I want. Sure, I can, but I won’t be as productive. Before diving into tasks, I spend five minutes deciding what really matters.

The Eisenhower Matrix teaches us that not everything important is urgent, and not everything urgent is important.

I have limited time, and it’s up to me to decide what is worth my time. I try to accomplish my top three priorities, then everything else becomes secondary.

5. Tidy Up (on Weekends)

Your environment affects your productivity. Only a few things are worse than starting a Monday morning with a desk piled high with clutter. It instantly puts you in a distracted headspace.

On weekends, Sundays to be specific, I take time to clean my home. I do the laundry, clean my home workspace, and change the bedsheets. That way, Monday morning starts fresh with productive tasks in mind.

Tackle the Day

A productive morning routine leaves you energized and ready to take on whatever comes your way. For me, it’s the little things like waking up at a consistent time and moving my body. Yours doesn’t have to look exactly like mine. Design something that works for you.
