The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has released one of its officers to the Ghana Police Service for investigation over an alleged role in the transportation of a large quantity of ammunition in the Upper East Region.

The officer, identified as Assistant Immigration Control Officer I Ahmed Abdul Samad, was handed over to the Police following a formal request from investigators.

According to the Immigration Service, the decision was taken to allow the Police to conduct a thorough probe into the matter without obstruction or interference.

In a press statement dated January 6 and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Immigration Maud Anima Quainoo, the Service confirmed the arrest and subsequent release of the officer to assist ongoing investigations linked to ammunition intercepted by the Police in the region.

The statement noted that the action was carried out by the Upper East Regional Command in line with established procedures.

For many Ghanaians, the case has raised concerns about the movement of arms and ammunition, particularly in border regions where security remains a sensitive issue.

Residents and security watchers say incidents of this nature heighten anxiety and reinforce the need for vigilance among institutions entrusted with national safety.

The Immigration Service has sought to reassure the public that it will not protect any officer whose conduct threatens public security or damages the credibility of the institution.

“The Ghana Immigration Service wishes to assure the general public that it will not shield any officer whose actions undermine public safety or compromise the integrity and professionalism of the Service,” the statement said.

The Service added that it is cooperating fully with the Police as investigations continue and has pledged to take appropriate disciplinary action should the officer be found culpable.

The situation remains under investigation, with authorities urging calm as due process takes its course.
