Thunder Queens FC players Akyiaa Asante and Gifty Osei have been fined GHC500 each by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for verbally assaulting a match official.
Akyiaa Asante was accused of verbally assaulting centre referee Christiana Owusua Amponsah in a match against Sea Lions FC at the Nduom Sports Complex.
The alleged unsporting behaviour towards the match official reportedly occurred in the 61st minute of the Women’s Premier League match.
The player pleaded guilty to the charges against her but insisted that she did not insult the referee in her defence statement.
She argued that she was encouraging her teammates after her team conceded a penalty during the game.
The second accused person, Gifty Osei, in her defence, claimed that she only ran onto the pitch to support her teammates.
However, the Disciplinary Committee found both players guilty and fined them GHC500 each and warned them that further acts of misconduct would result in more severe punishment.
