Former EC Deputy Chairman Amadu Sulley Passes Away

The family of the former Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Alhaji Amadu Sulley, has announced his sudden passing.

He died on the afternoon of March 1, 2025, and was laid to rest the following day in accordance with Islamic tradition.

A statement from the family invited Muslim brothers and sisters, friends, and loved ones to participate in his burial at his residence and the Madina Muslim Cemetery.

“Fortunately, Alhaji Amadu Sulley passed away with fasting (1st day of Ramadan). To Allah be the glory. May Allah forgive him and grant all our departed souls Jannat Firdaus,” the statement read.

Alhaji Sulley was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in 2012 by then-president John Evans Atta Mills.

Before that, he served as the Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Commission.

His appointment marked the first time a career electoral officer had risen to that rank.

He served as Deputy Chairperson in charge of operations until his dismissal in June 2018, following allegations of illegally transferring votes during the 2016 general elections.

Amadu Sulley received his elementary education at Ghana National School (now Richard Akwei Memorial School) in Accra.

He later attended Accra Academy and Opoku Ware School for his Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates, respectively.

He furthered his education at the University of Ghana, earning a Diploma in Statistics in 1985.

He also obtained a Postgraduate Certificate and a Diploma in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 1993 and 1995, respectively, with a focus on the Ghanaian electoral system.
