The head of the UN’s World Food Programme has warned that food aid in Ethiopia’s Tigray region will run out this Friday and has called for more supplies to be allowed in immediately.
David Beasley said 170 food trucks were being held up in the neighbouring Afar region – where fighting has been taking place in recent days.
Hundreds of thousands of people in Tigray are living in famine-like conditions. International calls for dialogue and a ceasefire have had no impact.
Almost nine months after the fighting began, there are signs that the conflict is spreading as the recruitment of fighters is taking place across several regions of the country.
