Health officials in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region have confirmed the area’s first case of Mpox, a viral disease that has been drawing increasing global concern.

The case involves an individual who had recently traveled from the Accra Konkomba market and began showing symptoms consistent with the virus.

After medical evaluation and laboratory testing, health authorities confirmed the diagnosis.

At a press briefing, District Health Director Eric Kojo Agboka explained that Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, is a zoonotic virus that can spread from animals to humans and between people.

Symptoms usually include fever, body rashes, and swollen lymph nodes, which can sometimes lead to severe health issues.

Agboka called for increased public awareness and encouraged residents to seek medical help if they experience any unusual symptoms.

District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nkwanta North, Isaiah Dordoe, echoed the call for caution and community support.

“We are working closely with the health department to ensure that all necessary measures are in place to prevent further spread of the virus,” he said.

He added that contact tracing has already begun to identify anyone who may have been exposed to the confirmed patient.

Health workers have also started public education campaigns, focusing on symptoms and hygiene practices to help control the spread.
