Fire destroys structures at Madina

Fire gutted structures at Ritz Junction, a suburb of Madina in Accra on Monday, January 30.

The fire, which started around 1:00 pm razed over 30 makeshift container shops and houses, destroying properties worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service were at the scene to douse the fire.

The police were also at the scene to check theft and maintain law and order.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

A member of the GNFS Communication Team DO1 Alex King Nartey, addressing the media at the fire scene, said the GNFS during its normal station outlook exercise around 1:00 pm detected the smoke and moved to the scene around 1:49 pm and saw the fire spreading and called for re-enforcement.

He said about 70 per cent of structures in the area had been salvaged.

DO1 Nartey said there were no casualties and that investigations would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the fire.

This is not the first time fire has swept through several wooden structures and containers at Madina.

In June 2022, over 100 structures used for both residential and commercial purposes and their contents worth thousands of cedis were lost in the raging fire.

The inferno, according to firefighters, started at about 10:21 on Sunday morning with the cause not immediately known.
