On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, a judge hearing a case in an Amasaman Court ordered the arrest of a ‘fake lawyer’ representing the defendant.

This comes after it was uncovered that the 70-year-old Nii Bi Griffiths Dodoo was not listed on the list of solicitors and also belonged to an illegal law firm.

A report by the Amasaman Divisional Police said the court’s registrar brought the suspect to their station.

“Court registrar arrested to Amasaman Divisional Headquarters, a 70-year-old suspect, Lawyer Nii Bi Griffiths Dodoo, dressed in a wig, a bib and gown with the help of court warrant officers on the orders of the circuit judge.

“The suspect lawyer had presented himself as the counsel for a defendant in Suit No. C1/33/2023 titled Rev. Dr Samuel Adu VRS Nii Osabu Akwei 1. He presented his practice licence number as eGAR/02121/23 from DUAME, GEORGE AND ASSOCIATES, with chamber No. ePP00217/23,” the report said.

It added that a document presented to the court from the General Legal Council (GLC), signed by the Secretary of the GLC, Justice Cynthia Pamela Addo, said the suspect was not on the roll of lawyers.

Meanwhile, the police said they are conducting further investigations as they prepare the case for prosecution.

There have been several arrests in relation to fake lawyers.

In December 2020, police arrested the legal counsel representing some 78 accused persons standing trial for secessionism after he was found to be fake.

The suspect, 42-year-old Dennis Seyram Benson, was a vocal ‘lawyer’ who always announced himself as the practice of the court demanded, even on days he was late.

The police, in a statement, said his demeanour in court raised suspicion, leading to a background check which revealed that he was a fake lawyer.

He was later charged with treason together with the 21 secessionists he represented.
