The Eastern Regional Police Command has closed the Kukurantumi Ohene Park after a tense clash between supporters of Port City FC and True Democracy FC disrupted a Division One League match and left several people injured.
The incident unfolded on Sunday, January 4, 2025, shortly after the end of the first half.
With Port City FC holding a slim one-goal-to-nil lead at the break, what should have been a routine recess quickly turned chaotic.
Supporters from both sides began hurling stones at each other, forcing match officials and security personnel to intervene as panic spread across sections of the park.
Some fans sustained injuries in the confusion, while the windscreen of the bus transporting the True Democracy FC team was damaged.
For many present, including families and young football lovers, the experience was frightening and far removed from the joy usually associated with local league football.
Police officers stationed at the venue immediately called for reinforcement. With additional personnel deployed, the situation was brought under control, and the violent supporters were dispersed.
To prevent further incidents, the away team and their supporters were escorted out of Kukurantumi through Osiem to Tema under tight security.
Calm has since returned to the community, but the police say firm action is necessary to prevent a repeat.
In a statement, the command announced that the stadium would remain closed as investigations continue.
No arrests have been made so far, but football fans in the area are being urged to support efforts to keep matches safe and enjoyable for everyone.
