The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has revealed that eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the chaos which erupted during the Ablekuma North constituency rerun elections.
The IGP disclosed this during a meeting with the executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
Three journalists, as well as some political figures, were assaulted during the rerun of the Ablekuma North election in 19 polling stations on July 11 this year.
According to him, the suspects were arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command and are currently being processed for prosecution.
“The Accra Regional Commander, as of yesterday, said he had eight suspects. Eight suspects have been arrested.
“They are being processed, and from the advice I had from the Regional Commander, tomorrow or Friday, they will be put before the court,” he noted.
The recent rerun, which was marked by incidents of violence and aggression, has sparked significant outrage among the public, media, and various civil society organisations.
Footage showing suspected party operatives attacking citizens and observers has spread across social media, leading to immediate demands for accountability.
In response, the Inspector General of Police reassured the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) that the Police Service is dedicated to delivering justice and will hold responsible anyone found to have acted inappropriately, including officers who did not uphold professional standards during the unrest.
“We are making progress and we will make sure that whatever happens, justice will be done to those who, in one way or the other, did not do their work in a professional manner,” he said.
The IGP reaffirmed the police administration’s strict stance against misconduct, highlighting that the integrity of elections and public confidence rely heavily on the professionalism of law enforcement personnel.
