Eight arrested after deadly violence at Nkwanta SHS

Eight individuals have been arrested following a disturbing wave of violence that has shaken the Nkwanta community and left three students injured, one of whom has tragically died.

The violence began on Thursday, June 26, when two female day students were shot on their way to school.

Their injuries intensified fears about rising tensions in the area, prompting immediate concern from authorities and residents alike.

The situation escalated the next day, Friday, June 27, when tragedy struck again. A male student, sitting in his classroom during mock examinations, was fatally hit by a stray bullet.

His death has sent shockwaves through the community and raised urgent questions about the safety of students in their learning environments.

In response, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region, citing the need to protect students and staff from further harm.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Regional Police Command, provided reassurance that a robust security plan is now in place.

“As I speak, calm has been restored in Nkwanta following recent incidents. Swift and decisive action has been taken to maintain law and order,” DSP Nchor stated.

Police have increased patrols and set up checkpoints throughout the region to prevent further violence and safeguard the community.

The tragic events have brought renewed focus to long-standing tensions in the area, with community leaders calling for open dialogue, reconciliation, and unity to prevent further bloodshed.

As investigations continue, the community remains watchful, united in hope for a swift return to peace and the restoration of safety for all especially the region’s young students.
