Do not abolish OSP – Inusah Fuseini to government

A former Member of Parliament representing Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has advised the Majority Caucus in Parliament to proceed with caution as it advocates for the elimination of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

This statement follows the Majority in Parliament, under the leadership of Mahama Ayariga, initiating efforts to abolish the OSP and transfer full prosecutorial responsibilities for corruption and related offences to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

During a session in Parliament on Thursday, December 4, Mr. Ayariga raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of the OSP, despite what he characterised as superior budgetary allocations compared to the Attorney-General’s Department.

He contended that the office has not fulfilled its mandate and should consequently be dissolved, whether through a private member’s bill or an amendment sponsored by the executive.

However, in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi News, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini expressed his disagreement with the Majority’s stance.

He maintained that Ghana has not yet achieved success in combating corruption, rendering it premature to dismantle an institution specifically established to address this issue.

He emphasised that the OSP requires additional time and support to yield tangible results.

“Nothing has convinced me that we need to cancel the anti-corruption agency, and it is because we have not succeeded in fighting corruption. Have we? If we had succeeded, the office would have been redundant.

“But we have not succeeded, and we are still going after people alleged to be involved in corrupt acts. So nothing has changed, and the OSP is trying his best,” he noted.
