Despite pressure from shipping lines for a rate increase, the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC), led by Managing Director Dr. Wisdom Kofi Dogbey, has secured an agreement to maintain current shipping rates at the annual Cocoa Freight Negotiation Conference, hosted by the Senalia Group.
This ensures Ghanaian cocoa remains globally competitive while reinforcing CMC’s commitment to the industry’s sustainability.
Dr Dogbey led a Ghanaian delegation to the conference, which convened key shipping industry stakeholders to address critical issues in global cocoa trade and freight logistics.
In his keynote, he stressed the need for collaboration to strengthen the cocoa supply chain.
“We must unite to create a sustainable framework that supports our farmers and ensures the success of Ghana’s cocoa industry,” he said.
He urged shipping lines to increase calls at Takoradi Port, adopt advanced technology, and ensure a steady supply of food-grade containers. Supported by the Ghana Shippers Authority, CMC’s position was robustly represented.
Dr Dogbey also called for greater corporate social responsibility, stating, “Supporting local communities fosters a more equitable and sustainable cocoa industry.”
His advocacy led to a key victory: resisting proposed rate hikes, securing stable shipping costs, and preserving Ghanaian cocoa’s competitiveness.
During the conference, Dr Dogbey also visited a leading French chocolate manufacturer using Ghanaian cocoa, gaining insights into their production and reinforcing the value of Ghana’s high-quality beans.
Expressing gratitude to the shipping lines, Dr Dogbey concluded the conference with optimism for enhanced cooperation.
This success strengthens CMC’s position and Ghana’s standing in the global cocoa market, laying a foundation for sustainable practices and a brighter future for Ghanaian cocoa farmers.
