Residents of Cape Coast and surrounding communities in the Central Region have been notified of a planned power outage scheduled for Thursday, January 8, 2026, as authorities undertake major upgrades to power transmission infrastructure in the area.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO), electricity supply will be interrupted from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to enable engineers to replace an existing 33MVA transformer at the Cape Coast Substation with a higher-capacity 66MVA transformer.
The Ministry explained that the planned outage is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient execution of the upgrade works, which are aimed at strengthening the national power transmission system.
The replacement is expected to significantly boost the substation’s capacity, improve the quality and stability of electricity supply, and support the connection of more households and businesses in Cape Coast and its environs to the national grid.
The upgrade forms part of the government’s broader agenda to expand and modernise electricity transmission infrastructure through the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and its agencies.
GRIDCO engineers are expected to carry out the work under strict supervision, with measures in place to ensure the project is completed within the scheduled timeframe to allow for the prompt restoration of power.
The Ministry and GRIDCO have apologised to residents and businesses for any inconvenience the outage may cause and have assured the public of their continued commitment to delivering reliable and improved electricity supply in support of national development.
