C/R: Learner driver kills mother of four

A learner driver lost control of the vehicle he was operating and tragically struck a mother of four in Assin Fosu, located in the Central Region, on November 18, 2025.

The victim, Gladys Mensah, aged 40, succumbed to her injuries after she was run over by the Hyundai truck that was being utilised for the learner’s driving instruction.

As reported by police sources, the supervising driver, Benjamin Kwarfo, aged 26, was instructing his conductor (mate), Eric Ackon, aged 34, on how to operate a Hyundai truck with the registration number GR 6146-12, when the vehicle became uncontrollable due to the learner driver’s inexperience.

The truck collided with Gladys Mensah, who was selling second-hand clothing and boxer shorts by the roadside near the SDA School in the Habitat suburb of Assin Fosu.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck dragged the victim for several metres before crashing into a nearby house, resulting in significant damage to the structure.

They described the scene as horrifying, noting that the woman suffered severe head injuries and was bleeding profusely.

She was transported to St. Francis Xavier Hospital, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead later that day.

The Central North Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Assistant Superintendent of Police Wonder Lumor, who provided a briefing to the media, stated that both the learner driver and the supervising driver have been detained by the police in Assin Fosu to assist with the investigation, and the vehicle has been impounded.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to the mortuary at St. Francis Xavier Hospital.

Residents have expressed profound sorrow over the incident and have called on authorities to secure the partially collapsed structure affected by the accident, as it poses a risk to pedestrians.
