Asantehene strikes again as he destools chief of Ohwim

The Asantehene, Osei Tutu II, has destooled the Chief of Ohwim in the Ashanti Region at the sitting of the Kumasi Traditional Council over multiple offences.

Nana Kusi Baaye II, who held the title of Ohwimhene for 16 years, faced serious accusations, including extortion related to chieftaincy issues, unauthorized land sales, including cemetery lands, and illicit mining activities.

The primary reason for his summons to the council was his reckless invocation of the Asantehene’s Great Oath (Ntamkese), an act deemed misleading to the Otumfuo and disrespectful to the Golden Stool.

“You vowed with the Great Oath to be truthful but you went against it. You don’t deserve to stay on the stool. Many have sacrificed to protect the Golden Stool, I won’t allow you to destroy it,” said the Asantehene.

During the proceedings, various individuals came forward with further allegations against him, including members of his own royal family who accused him of providing false testimony in a chieftaincy dispute.

His sister claimed he was selling family lands in the name of the Asantehene only to divert them for illegal mining activities.

“We were told that Otumfuo had taken the land for a solar project, but realized that he was undertaking galamsey activities and destroyed the land,” said the sister.

Additionally, the chief opposed the installation of a queen and had neglected to carry out traditional rites, citing his conversion to Christianity as the reason.

Due to his lack of honesty with the Asantehene, the divisions of the Kumasi Traditional Council unanimously called for Nana Kusi Baaye’s removal.
