Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead following a gun battle with the Police near Manso Antoakrom in the Ashanti Region during an intelligence-led operation by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command.
The incident occurred on December 31, 2025, after Police received information that a group of armed men had positioned themselves along the Antoakrom to Manso Nkwanta road and were planning to attack unsuspecting commuters.
Officers were quickly deployed to the area to prevent the suspected robbery.
Upon reaching the location, the suspects allegedly opened fire while attempting to flee, leading to an exchange of gunfire between them and the Police.
Two of the suspects were hit during the confrontation. The remaining two, believed to have sustained gunshot injuries, managed to escape into nearby areas.
The injured suspects were rushed to the Bekwai Government Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
A search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of an AK 47 rifle loaded with ammunition, a pump action gun, several cartridges, and a black Toyota Voxy vehicle believed to have been used by the group.
The deceased were later identified as Mohammed Umaru, aged 28, and Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Yaw, aged 26.
Briefing journalists, Deputy Commander of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, ACP Cephas Arthur, said, “The suspects admitted to involvement in several robbery cases across the country, including the Mpohor gold robbery, the Nyinahini highway robbery, and the Cocoa Shed robbery at Sefwi”.
Police say investigations are ongoing as efforts intensify to track down the remaining suspects and dismantle the wider criminal network linked to the gang.
