A 27-year-old man allegedly killed his 60-year-old mother, Abrewa Nni Nkran, at Woromso in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region.
The assembly member for the area, Mr. Ernest Karikari, confirmed the incident to the media, describing it as cold and barbaric.
According to him, the young man’s motive for such an offence remains unclear.
He said residents in the area have been sent into a state of shock.
He revealed the suspect, Kwame Boat, attacked the mother with a cutlass and threatened to unleash mayhem on anyone who attempted to apprehend him.
“The suspect was unable to be apprehended due to his use of a cutlass, and a hunter intervened, resulting in his leg being shot before being disarmed and arrested,” he narrated.
Asked if the suspect was mentally unstable, Mr Karikari answered negatively, adding that he was of sound mind.
He did, however, confirm that the suspect is a reformed alcoholic.
Cases of matricides have become rampant in recent times.
On May 14, 2023, a 21-year-old Jamaican identified as Tafari Abednego Thompson allegedly killed his 59-year-old mother, Madam Mwassa Tafari, at Obosomase-Akuapem in the Eastern Region.
The incident happened on Sunday, May 14, Mother’s Day.
The suspect reportedly used a metal object to inflict multiple wounds on his mother, disfiguring her face.
Tafari Abednego is believed to be mentally unstable.
The suspect reportedly fled into the nearby bush immediately after committing the heinous crime.
