2024 WAFCON: Black Queens fall 2-0 to South Africa in Group C opener

Ghana’s Black Queens suffered a 2-0 defeat against defending champions South Africa in their opening match of Group C at the 2025 WAFCON on July 7, held at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco.

Linda Motlhalo scored the first goal from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, followed by Jermaine Seoposenwe, who increased the lead with a precise finish just six minutes later. Ghana struggled to create clear scoring opportunities, with most of their attempts coming from long-range.

South Africa’s performance reinforced their reputation, showcasing their sharpness and efficiency despite the absence of star striker Thembi Kgatlana. This match underlined their status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy once again.

The Black Queens must win their remaining matches against Mali on Friday and Tanzania on Monday, July 14, to keep their hopes of qualification alive.

Despite preparing with friendlies against Malawi, Botswana, and Nigeria, their training did little to sharpen their performance.

Their difficulty in breaking through South Africa’s organised defence highlighted flaws in both their tactical execution and in-game adaptability.
