141 suspected cybercriminals apprehended in Tabora and Lashibi

Security agencies have apprehended 141 individuals suspected of engaging in cybercrime during a coordinated operation conducted in the early hours across Tabora and Lashibi, aimed at dismantling organised networks involved in mobile money fraud and business email compromise scams.

The intelligence-driven operation was executed by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in partnership with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the headquarters of the Ghana Immigration Service.

This operation led to the apprehension of 100 suspects in Tabora and 41 in Lashibi.

Initial investigations suggest that the suspects are likely to be Nigerian nationals.

Throughout the operation, officers seized 38 laptops and 150 mobile phones believed to have been utilised in the perpetration of cyber-enabled financial crimes.

Authorities also detained a Ghanaian landlord who reportedly housed 100 of the suspects in his property.

Security officials emphasised that property owners bear the responsibility to ensure their premises are not exploited to facilitate or perpetuate criminal activities.

The suspects are accused of participating in various cybercrime activities, including mobile money fraud, romance scams, sextortion, business email compromise, and wire fraud.

Forensic examinations of the confiscated electronic devices are currently in progress, and individuals found guilty will be processed in accordance with Ghanaian law.

The Cyber Security Authority has urged the public to remain alert, report any suspicious digital activities, and support national initiatives to combat cybercrime.

While reiterating that Ghana is welcoming to foreigners engaged in legitimate business, the Authority cautioned that cybercriminal activities will be met with strict enforcement of the law.
