Wontumi’s lawyer denies plea bargain with Attorney-General

Lawyer for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has denied claims that his client has offered any plea bargain to the Office of the Attorney-General.

Speaking in an interview, Andy Appiah-Kubi said no such offer has been made, adding that it is too early to discuss a plea deal since the case has not reached that stage.

He said the defence team is waiting for the Attorney-General’s next legal steps before responding.

His comments follow Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine’s revelation that his office had received and rejected several plea offers related to Wontumi’s ongoing prosecution for alleged illegal mining.

Dr. Ayine insisted that no political influence has affected his decisions and that any plea deal would only be considered under a court’s supervision.

“No deal has been cut, and no deal will be cut except under a court of competent jurisdiction,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi is being tried for alleged illegal mining linked to Akonta Mining Limited.

He is accused of operating without a license and authorising unapproved mining in the Samreboi Forest Reserve.

He has pleaded not guilty and is currently on bail, with conditions including the surrender of his passport and a stop-list order.
