The University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Education, Winneba Chapter (UTAG-UEW), is calling for a full and thorough investigation into the brutal murder of Professor Mawuadem Koku Amedeker, whose body was found buried in his own home at Gyahadze, a suburb of Winneba.

Prof Amedeker had been missing for several weeks before his remains were discovered and exhumed on May 22, 2025, under disturbing circumstances. The incident has left the UEW community and the nation in shock and mourning.

In a statement released on Sunday, May 25, UTAG-UEW described the killing as a devastating blow to academia. They mourned the loss of a colleague they say was deeply respected and dedicated to education and public service.

“UTAG-UEW sympathises with the bereaved family, his students, colleagues, and the entire UEW fraternity during this difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences and share in their grief,” the association said.

The group commended the Ghana Police Service for beginning investigations promptly and making an arrest, but urged them to intensify efforts to ensure that everyone involved is brought to justice. UTAG-UEW also expressed gratitude to the national leadership of UTAG for their support during what it described as a painful moment for the academic community.

In addition to justice, UTAG-UEW is calling on government, university authorities, and security services to improve safety on campuses across the country. The association pledged to honor Prof Amedeker’s legacy by continuing to uphold the principles he stood for.
