A wave of confusion rippled across the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on Wednesday, July 2, after several students were reportedly sent home by a campus task force for wearing what was deemed as inappropriate clothing.
This development follows earlier signals from the university’s leadership that strict enforcement of its dress code was imminent.
According to eyewitnesses, the affected students were asked to leave lectures and return to their homes or hostels to change into more acceptable attire before they could rejoin class activities.
One of the students, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, shared their experience, saying, “Some of us were just about to enter class when we were stopped and told to go and change. They didn’t allow any room for debate”.
Although there has been no official statement from the university’s administration at the time of this report, the action appears to align with a renewed push to reinforce discipline and uphold UPSA’s code of conduct on campus.
Meanwhile, student reactions are mixed; some agree on the need for decorum in academic settings, while others believe the enforcement was abrupt and lacked proper communication.
