An Okada rider has allegedly been shot and killed by suspected armed robbers at Awutu Mampong in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The two suspects involved in the incident were later apprehended by residents and fellow Okada riders, who lynched them in anger.
The victim, Kofi Mensah, had recently completed Senior High School and was working as an Okada rider to save money for his further education.
According to reports, the two suspects hired Kofi Mensah to take them from Awutu Mampong to Agona Mankrong.
About five minutes into the journey, one of the men asked Kofi to stop, claiming he needed to urinate.
When he stopped, the suspects allegedly demanded the motorbike keys and threatened to kill him if he refused.
Kofi pleaded with them to take his mobile phone and the day’s earnings instead, explaining that the motorbike was not his but a “work-and-pay” arrangement.
Despite his pleas, he was reportedly shot.
The Assemblyman for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, Ishmael Odoom, told the media that after shooting him, the attackers broke Kofi’s neck, tied his hands with a rope, and escaped with the motorbike.
Shortly afterward, another Okada rider passing by found Kofi Mensah’s body by the roadside and alerted others.
A search team was quickly formed, leading to the arrest of the two suspects at Agona Osedu.
However, news of the rider’s murder sparked outrage among residents and Okada riders, who attacked and killed the suspects.
The bodies of Kofi Mensah and the two suspects have been taken to the Police Hospital morgue in Accra as investigations continue.
Assemblyman Ishmael Odoom has urged Okada riders to remain vigilant to avoid similar tragedies.
