Two die in midnight fire at carpentry shop in Sunyani

A fire that ravaged a carpentry shop in Penkwasi, a suburb of the Sunyani East Municipality in the Bono Region, has claimed the lives of two people.

The deceased have been identified as Reagan Kofi Atuahene and Alhassan Sherif Majeed. Tragically, both were trapped within the burning building and unable to escape.

According to witnesses, the fire broke out around midnight, raising alarms as the Bono Region has experienced 158 fire incidents this year, which has intensified concerns over fire safety in the community.

One shop worker, Zakari Abdul Mali, recounted the harrowing experience.

“When we woke up, smoke filled the entire area. We had to force the door open. Three of us managed to get out, but unfortunately, two remained inside”.

Rachel Duku, who is the brother of the shop owner, provided her perspective on the event: “The door was locked, but I managed to open it and step outside. By then, the fire had already engulfed my brother’s shop. There were five young men sleeping inside”.

Meanwhile, ACFO II Cecil Risch Addo, the Bono Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, has confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

“We have started investigations, and we are getting a clue to what happened. They should be assured that the bare facts will be laid before everybody,” he stated.
