The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana is urging the government to take urgent action on the country’s mounting debt, which has now exceeded GH¢800 billion.
According to the TUC, Ghana’s unsustainable debt load is draining national resources and depriving citizens of essential infrastructure, including quality schools, hospitals, and other social services.
Speaking during the presentation of a petition to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat in Accra on Friday, August 29, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah warned that workers will not sit idly by.
“We want to send a strong message to the Government of Ghana through AfCFTA: if urgent steps aren’t taken to address the debt crisis, Ghanaians will be forced to act, our future is being mortgaged, and workers will not remain silent while schools, hospitals, and public services suffer,” Mr Ansah stressed.
He added that the petition also aims to draw attention at the continental level, so that unions across Africa understand the growing concerns within Ghana.
The petition was received on behalf of the AfCFTA Secretariat by Albert Kan-Dapaah Jnr., a Senior Advisor to the Secretary-General, who assured the delegation it would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
