A traditional cleansing ceremony has been performed at Bawku Senior High School following the tragic killing of a final-year student, Mohammed Imoro Kundima, on July 26, 2025.

The student was shot by unidentified armed men during renewed violence linked to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region.

In response, elders from the Kpalwega community, where the school is located, conducted a spiritual cleansing ritual to restore peace and protect the school.

The Tengdana of Kpalwega, Akubilla Azubilla, led the ceremony, which included the sacrifice of a red cock and red goat and the symbolic burial of an okro stick. The ritual is believed to drive away evil and bring calm to the area.

The Tengdana explained that the ceremony was necessary to prevent further tragedy.

“This sacrifice is for the safety of the children and to make sure such a painful thing does not happen here again,” he said.

Bawku SHS has faced disruptions due to the unrest, and school authorities are now focused on protecting students ahead of their upcoming exams.

Headmaster Rev. Abugbilla Bukari called on the government and the Ghana Education Service to support efforts that will allow students to stay safely on campus during the examination period.

Relocating students, he noted, might expose them to even greater danger.

The Assembly Member for Kpalwega Electoral Area, Elvis Agooma, also assured the community’s commitment to providing security and stability around the school.
