Three days of mourning declared in Ghana after deadly helicopter crash

President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all scheduled activities and programs for the rest of the week following a tragic helicopter crash on Wednesday that claimed the lives of eight individuals.

In a press statement issued by the President’s Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), the government announced three days of national mourning beginning Thursday, August 7, 2025.

As a mark of respect for the victims, the Chief of Staff has directed that all national flags fly at half-mast across the country until further notice.

The President expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. The statement encouraged the nation to observe this period of mourning with solemnity and reflection.

In a related note, the Vice President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, led a delegation of senior government officials, national executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the Military High Command to formally inform the families of the eight individuals who died in the helicopter crash.

The Vice President visited the homes of Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, and Alhaji Minuru Limuna, the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah led another team to Koforidua to offer condolences to the mother and family of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence.

Two additional teams have also been dispatched to visit the families of the helicopter crew in Takoradi, including NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong and Deputy Director-General of NADMO Samuel Aboagye.
