SIM Card re-registration goes digital in June — Sam George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has announced that the upcoming SIM card re-registration in June will be done digitally to avoid long queues.

This initiative also aims at simplifying the process of registration for Ghanaians.

The minister revealed this during his visit to Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra on April 8, 2025.

According to the minister, an automated system will handle the verification of personal information, which will greatly reduce processing times.

This improved method is anticipated to save citizens valuable time while enhancing accuracy, ensuring a smoother registration experience.

It will be recalled that the SIM card re-registration initiative launched in 2021 has seen several deadline extensions due to low registration rates.

This will be the third time such an exercise will be conducted in the country.

In 2022, the previous government conducted a SIM card re-registration, which required cardholders to visit various Mobile Network Operators (MNOs’) offices to link their SIM cards with their Ghana Cards.

Failure to comply led to SIM blockages or the withdrawal of essential services.

With millions of active SIM cards still unregistered, Mr George criticised the previous government’s approach, prompting the government to undertake the exercise again in June.

The government’s key aim with the SIM card registration exercise is to bolster national security, minimising fraudulent activities and crimes that are facilitated by unregistered SIM cards.

Additionally, it seeks to enhance industry regulation by maintaining accurate data on valid SIMs.
